Abstract Combined automated cassava grating/chipping machine was designed, tested and evaluated for its performance efficiencies, using two cassava species; TME 419 and TMS 30555. The cassava roots were classified into small, medium and large, the roots were used to evaluate the efficiency of the machine. The machine efficiency, mechanical loss and capacity (machine output, kg/h) for grating and chipping ranged between 85.00 - 89.70 % and 82.50 - 92.30 %, 10.30 - 15.00 % and 6.00 - 20.00 %, 51.00 - 80.70 kg/h and 95.80 - 167.67 kg/h respectively. The quality performance of the grater was between 86.47 - 92.19 % while the chips size characteristics also revealed high efficiency. The performance of the machine was affected by the specie and size of the cassava tube. The medium size cassava revealed the highest efficiency in grating and chipping operation.
